Dear Friends and Primos:
Happy New Year. The beginning of the year is always a reminder that we can start fresh, with resolutions to make changes, improving our lives and surroundings. With that same intent, you will see changes in both the format and articles included in Somos Primos. To facilitate reading, I've included more 2 and 3 column layouts and have limited the length of the issue.
Most of us have a general understanding of US history; but, I've added a new category, Historic Tidbits. This section will include little known historic facts. These tidbits will serve as reminders, and will be easy to share with others. The Tidbits can fortify and reinforce your individual efforts to clarify our historic presence in the development of the United States. We are too many to be invisible . . . understanding our presence is needed.
A recent comment on the televised history program, stated Collective Learning is what makes humans different from other animals. Something to think about. The ability to share what we have learned scientifically has produced changes so quickly that for many of us, it is difficult to keep up. Through the power of the Internet, sharing is at a state, never before imaged. In the late 40s, I remember party-line telephones, now each individual can connect virtually with the world on a little hand-held phone; but, what are we sharing?
I am really grateful for Cuentos being shared by readers. I read about courage, compassion and strength of character that drives individuals. I read about the love that we have for one another, the admiration, and the pride in the accomplishments of family members, or even someone with the same surname.. It is the accumulation of all our personal stories which explain who we are.
Please share your stories. They don't have to be long, but rather focused on a special, treasured memory, funny, sad, crazy, happenstance, tradition. There is a reason that you remember it.
For February, Valentine Month, it would be wonderful to share stories about your Abuelitos y Abuelitas, Tios y Tias, or your sweetheart, your children's successes. Maybe there is someone in your life, not necessarily a family member, but someone who made a difference in your life. . . honor their memory. Share it, as if you were telling a story. Your memory of them matters.
Larry Garza adds a spiritual vision, with a dimension is difficult to grasp: "I believe the Internet is one of the greatest Breakthroughs in the history of the human race. It will be an eternal record until there is an apocalypse of the human race. Once it's on the Internet it becomes an eternal record."
